What do you think of when you think of Vermont? Skiing? Cheese? Ben & Jerry’s ice cream? Maple syrup? When there are no national parks to visit, but we really wanted to visit the state during a long weekend, we decided that staying at a family-run maple syrup farm was the way to go.

The Robb Family Farm was a fantastic boondocking experience for our family. After a long drive day, we showed up to a warm welcome, an easy parking spot on the main driveway, and a load of dry firewood begging for a fire on a cold evening.

It was getting late but we decided to pick up a pizza and check out the small town we drove through to get to the farm. Brattleboro, VT may not be on the radar, but it was a perfect host for walking around, walking through a classic covered bridge, and purchasing local favorites from one of the small shops in town.

We waited till the next morning to get a tour of the sugar shack and learn more about the process of making the maple syrup. We were intrigued by all the tubes weaving through the trees, along the small creek, and draining to a centralized location before being sent up-hill to the main facility.

After our tour, we sampled the different syrups and walked away with many maple syrup treats. As we walked back across the street to our RV, we loved the mooing cows welcoming us back. Several times, we found the kids walking along the fence-line watching the cows and the old, retired work horse in the field.

Unfortunately, we were only there part of the day, but it was such a positive experience, we would highly recommend staying with them if you’re passing through southern Vermont.
